Your visa length is strictly tied to your program length.

8 Months - 2 Years
1:1 Match. (e.g., 12 month program = 12 month visa).
2+ Years (or Masters)
3 Years. The Max.
Masters Exception

Degree Advantage

If you complete a Master's Degree that is less than 2 years (e.g., 16 months), you are still eligible for the full 3-Year PGWP.

Once in a Lifetime

One Shot

You can only receive ONE PGWP in your lifetime. If you waste it, you cannot get another one after a second degree.

4Document Checklist

Final Transcript

Official transcript from your DLI showing final grades for all terms.

Completion Letter

Official letter from the registrar confirming you have completed all requirements.

PGWP cannot legally exceed your passport expiry. Renew passport first if it expires soon.

IRCC Secure Account

Log in using GCKey. This is the same portal used for your Study Permit.

Questionnaire

Select "Work" > "Post-Graduation Work Permit". This generates your custom Checklist.

Upload & Pay

Upload IMM 5710 form and supporting docs. Pay the $255 fee. Save your **Submission Confirmation**.

6Spousal Leverage

Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP)

Your partner can work for any employer in Canada while you are on a PGWP.

Requirement

The PGWP holder (you) must typically have a High-Skilled Job (TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3) and provide 3 paystubs to support the spouse's application.

7Biometrics & Medicals

Biometrics

Fingerprints and photo. Valid for 10 years.

If you gave biometrics for your Study Permit within the last 10 years, you likely do not need to give them again.

Medical Exam

Required for healthcare/childcare jobs.

If you want to work in health services or with children, you must undergo a medical exam to remove restrictions from your permit.

8Travel & Strategy

Flying while Processing

Implied Status Risk

If you leave Canada while on "Implied Status" (waiting for PGWP), you can re-enter as a visitor, but you CANNOT WORK until the PGWP is approved.

TRV (Visa) Expiry

Your student visa (sticker in passport) might have expired. You cannot travel without a valid TRV or eTA.
