Global Talent Stream
"The Fast Track". A dedicated route for tech talent with a 2-week processing standard. Employers apply for an LMIA to hire you.
Employer-Driven
Unlike PGWP, you cannot apply for this yourself. Your employer must submit the LMIA application first. Always consult a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) or lawyer.
1Speed & Priority
The 10-Day Standard
The Global Talent Stream is famous for its speed. Once your employer submits a complete application, ESDC aims to process the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) within 10 business days.
2Category A vs B
Category A
For high-growth companies needing unique talent. Requires referral.
- Must be referred by a Designated Partner (e.g., MaRS, Communitech, Invest Ottawa).
- User Salary: $80,000+ (usually much higher).
Category B
For companies hiring for specific in-demand tech occupations.
- Software Engineers, Designers, Web Developers, etc.
- No referral needed; job just needs to be on the list.
3The Process
1. Employer Applies
Submits LMIA application & pays $1,000 fee.
2. Positive LMIA
ESDC approves and issues a decision letter.
3. You Apply
Use the LMIA # to apply for your work permit.
4Cost Structure
Employer Pays
Your company must pay the processing fee. You cannot pay this for them. It is illegal for them to ask you to pay it.
You Pay
Standard work permit processing fee. Biometrics ($85) may also apply.
5Validity Period
Up to 3 Years
GTS work permits can be issued for up to 3 years. This duration can be used to gain the Canadian experience needed for PR.
6Employer Obligations
Labour Market Benefits Plan (LMBP)
To hire you, your employer must sign a binding agreement with the government to create lasting benefits for the Canadian economy.
7Closed Work Permit
Employer-Specific
Unlike PGWP, you are tied to this employer. If you quit or are fired, you lose your status and cannot work for another company until you get a new permit.
8PR Strategy
Arranged Employment
A valid LMIA-supported job offer gives you an automatic 50 additional points in the Express Entry CRS score, significantly increasing your chances of getting an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Permanent Residency.
